Studio Session – Nassaba: Song of a Bird & Kaxxa Infernali by Jimmy Grima
In this workshop, Jimmy Grima guides participants through the creative essence of two documentary theatre works, following the journey of each piece from its origins in the field to the finished work on stage and beyond, across international venues and festivals. The workshop explores how dramaturgical decisions are made, how fieldwork and research feed the creative process, how sound and set are developed, and how the artist developed his artistic method of working with documentary material.
Nassaba: Song of a Bird is Jimmy Grima's hour-long documentary theatre piece, a portrait of a disappearing practice and a generational bond forged between father and son on the rocky Maltese coast. Following his father across fields where migratory birds were once caught, Jimmy weaves personal footage, bird-learned songs and the emotional world of the Maltese bird catchers into live performance. The piece toured to Theatre Spektakel (Zurich), Boulevard Theatre Festival (Den Bosch), Théâtre de Liège, and performed across villages and band clubs
throughout Malta and Gozo, reflecting both international acclaim and deep local resonance. It is performed in Maltese with English and French subtitles.
Kaxxa Infernali: Explosions is Jimmy Grima's 50-minute solo documentary theatre work, a sound landscape woven from voices, noise, histories and silences connected to explosions of every kind on the island of Malta: military, ritualistic, artistic, criminal. From the unexploded bombs fished from the islet of Filfla to the car bombs and firework factory disasters of more recent decades, the piece confronts Malta's deeply layered relationship with detonation
