Studio Sessions - Malta’s Vernacular Architecture: Essential Elements for Sustainable Buildings

Join us for an insightful exploration of traditional Maltese, Mediterranean, and North African architectural elements and their role in sustainable design. This session, by Perit Mark Cauchi and Perit James Dingli, will delve into time-tested strategies that enhance comfort while reducing energy consumption, offering valuable lessons for modern architecture.

We will examine key vernacular features such as courtyards—spaces that regulate temperature, provide natural light, and foster social interaction—alongside natural ventilation techniques like cross-ventilation and the stack effect, optimized in traditional designs. The discussion will also cover effective shading methods, including overhangs, screens, and vegetation, which mitigate heat gain and glare. Additionally, we’ll explore thermal mass, building orientation, local materials, and water management practices that contribute to sustainable living.

The session will highlight how these age-old principles can be adapted for contemporary architecture, improving energy efficiency and occupant well-being. Through case studies, we’ll showcase successful vernacular-inspired projects, including some of Mark and James' professional work, bridging the past with present-day sustainable design.

This event is ideal for architects, designers, and sustainability enthusiasts seeking inspiration from heritage to create resilient, low-energy built environments.

Location: Studio 1 & 2

Date & Time: 17th of September between 6pm and 8pm

This event forms part of the Valletta Design Cluster's Studio sessions programme.
